Roman archaeology at the Institute: the early years

Before moving to Oxford in 1967 the author was the first full-time Professor of Archaeology of the Roman Provinces at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. In this article he recalls his years at the Institute from 1955 to 1966, noting the move to new buildings in 1958 and the major excavations with which he and his students were associated including Verulamium at St Albans, Hertfordshire, and the Roman fort at Bowes, Yorkshire.
