Neoplasms of dendritic cells: related cell origins and diagnostic markers. Fibroblastic reticulum cells and fibroblastic reticulum cell tumors show several immunophenotypic profiles

Based on the antigenic expression, at least 4 types of FBRCTs are distinguished: (1) tumors that express vimentin, cytokeratins (CK8, CK18, AE1-AE3 CK), and focally, epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) [8]; (2) tumors that express vimentin, CKs, and on scattered cells, muscle antigens [8,9]; (3) tumors that express vimentin, smooth muscle actin, specific-muscle actin, and desmin, being negative for CKs [10]; (4) tumors that express some of the antigens of the other 3 types but are also positive for other markers such as S-100 protein, CD68, α-1-antitrypsin, lisozyme, factor XIII, fascin, and others [11].
