First observations on predation of 'fire worm' Hermodice carunculata (Pallas, 1766) and its effects on artisanal fishing in Lampedusa waters (Pelagie archipelago)

The article presents the first observations on predation of polichaeta fire worm, Hermodice carunculata on some commercial species caught with gill nets and trammel nets in Lampedusa waters (Pelagie archipelago, central Mediterranean). H. carunculata preys in particular the red mullet, Mullus surmuletus, the bream, Diplodus vulgaris, the larger forkbeard, Phycis phycis, the common dentex, Dentex dentex and the brown meagre, Sciaena umbra. Such predation activity creates considerable economic problems to the artisanal fishing in these waters.Original Abstract: Vengono raccolte le prime osservazione sull'attivita di predazione del polichete Hermodice carunculata a spese di alcune specie commerciali pescate con le reti da posta tramaglio e monoparete nelle acque di Lampedusa. H. carunculata preda in particolare la triglia di scoglio, Mullus surmuletus, il sarago fasciato, Diplodus vulgaris, la musdea, Phycis phycis, il dentice, Dentex dentex e la corvina, Sciaena umbra. Tale attivita predatoria crea notevoli problemi economici alla piccola pesca artigianale dell'isola. Clanek predstavlja prva opazanja predacije ognjenega crva Hermodice carunculata na nekatere komercialne vrste, ujete z zabodno in trislojno mrezo v vodah Lampeduze. Plen H. carunculata so zlasti progasti bradac, Mullus surmuletus, frater, Diplodus vulgaris, tabinja, Phycis phycis, zobatec, Dentex dentex in kaval, Sciaena umbra. Taksno predatorstvo povzroca resne gospodarske tezave obrtniskemu ribolovu v teh vodah.
