Fluoroquinolone susceptibility of Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from commercial rabbit farms in Spain

Marbofloxacin (MAR) and enrofloxacin (ENR), are relatively new synthetic fluoroquinolone antimicrobial drugs which have been developed especially for using in veterinary medicine, and they could be potentially useful in rabbits. [...]this study was designed to evaluate the degree of in vitro activity of MAR and ENR against 27 S aureus strains isolated from rabbits with chronic problems of staphylococcosis in Spain. Broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs such as fluoroquinolones have been recommended and used to treat these infections. Because fluoroquinolones are relatively new antimicrobial agents, extensive research is needed to develop and implement appropriate specific dosing regimens that can maximise their clinical efficacy for use in production animals and reduce the risk of selection of resistant pathogens, particularly, as these drugs are used for the treatment of multidrug resistant infection in human beings ( Walker 2000 ).
