Zusammenfassung: | Bain examines the socioeconomic status in early Christianity and Thecla's rejection of marriage. Ideologies associated with romance and erotic love can obscure socioeconomic dimensions of marriage. There are good reasons to suppose that Thecla traditions once circulated independently of their received form in the Acts of Paul and Thecla. However, the Acts of Paul and Thecla presents Thecla's marriage-free lifestyle as a matter of sexual status, thus obscuring the implications of marriage for women's socioeconomic status. |
