Taking as his case studies the works of the two most influential Middle High German practitioners of the genre-Hartmann von Aue and Wolfram von Eschenbach-Hasty convincingly argues that one may view love and adventure in the romances as speculative ventures, investments whose ultimate outcomes are unknown to those undertaking them.
