Zusammenfassung: | In 1980 Oxford University Press published an authoritative account by Edward Gillett and Kenneth A. MacMahon, titled A History of Hull. Since it was "My way or the highway," I had to agree to "Kingston upon Hull." [...]on pp 56-57, missing monetary amounts against the right margin marked "" are supplied in footnotes. [...]I arranged the Records so that the years 1612-13 and 1633-34 began with excerpts from the archives of each of the four Inns, followed by citations from contemporary letters in date order. (The traditional idea of supplying one long-form entry followed by one or more short-form entries later in the notes would not have worked well, as readers would have had a hard time locating the initial long-form entry.) The whole routine seemed to me as silly as if the Oxford English Dictionary cited itself with full bibliographical details each time it provided an internal cross-reference. |
