Zusammenfassung: | Reviews the book, Nicotine and tobacco dependence, by Alan L. Peterson, Mark W. Vander Weg, and Carlos R. Jaén (see record 2010-26763-000). the authors present a comprehensive review of tobacco use and nicotine dependence screening tools, as well as motivational interviewing techniques to assist practitioners in assessing the nature of the problem. These interviewing techniques help to change a patient’s mind-set toward a more active pursuit of an abstinent lifestyle. Case vignettes round out the discussion nicely, although, in the reviewers' opinion, there could be more, and they could be interspersed throughout the text rather than placed at the end. The reviewers report an error in the text in the discussion of medications. Bupropion SR is reported by the authors to be contraindicated in pregnancy, and this is not true. The major strength of the book is seen as its discussion of the various psychotherapeutic approaches to assist patients in quitting smoking and remaining abstinent.
