In The Long Shadow of the Civil War, Bynum uses Jones County and the North Carolina Piedmont areas, along with the Big Thicket region of East Texas, to examine how ordinary folks dissented from their Confederate neighbors, experienced the Civil War, and constructed their communities in the wake of this cataclysmic event. Two of her essays include an examination of unionist dissenters and guerrilla war in the three regions and the war's impact on the lives of poor white and black women on the home fronts.
