Zusammenfassung: | Women Feeding Cities: Mainstreaming Gender in Urban Agriculture and Food Security by Alice Hovorka, Henk de Zeeuw, and Mary Njenga (eds.), is reviewed. This book shows that in developing countries, an urban family's food security is dependent upon the food production activities of women. Due to limited education and a commitment to feeding their children, women are most involved in urban agriculture. They produce a variety of foods such as vegetables, meats, canned fruit, and nonfood items, for example, owers and herbs, using kitchen gardens and small garden plots. This book fulfills its two stated goals of presenting case studies of women's roles in urban agriculture in developing nations, and providing guidelines for conducting gender mainstreaming in urban agriculture research and development projects. |
