IN vain one searched among the natives for sure traces of a connexion with the ancient civilised races. The culture which flourished on the high table-lands of Bogota and Cuzco perished entirely with the people to whom it belonged. The degenerate successors of the Incas still preserve memories of the past in a few songs. But that is the only remaining reminiscence of bygone grandeur.
