Zusammenfassung: | Reviews the book "Writing your novel," by G. Ethel . Artists and literary critics usually write about their subjects in terms that are vague and often supernatural. This essay, however, is written by a person who is well versed in the point of view and the terminology of contemporary objective psychology and who holds that literature must now stand consonant with modern science. In scientific fashion the essay examines the novel as a phenomenon of human purposive behavior concerned with problems of adjustment. It proceeds, in stimulus-response terms, to examine character and its portrayal, setting, and action, and the technique of the novel in relation to its subject matter, purpose, and audience. Although the style of the book may perhaps be ponderous, the content and approach signalize the extension of the view of modern psychology into literature. |
