Zusammenfassung: | The effects of formal contracts were assessed within a standard behavior modification group treatment package for a community population of 76 18-64 yr old obese clients. Skinfold data permitted inclusion of percentage body fat loss as well as gross weight among the major dependent measures. Greatest success was achieved by the 3-dimensional (3D) behavioral group without contracts, but that group suffered the greatest attrition. Contracts served to retain clients in the program more so than the 3D group. Surprisingly, contract clients' low attrition was matched by the caloric information-exercise group who did not employ contracts. Following the 13-wk program, the behavioral treatment and information-exercise groups lost a greater percentage of weight than either the relaxation training or the waiting list control groups.
