Association of social competence with episodic vs remitted status in paranoid and nonparanoid schizophrenia

description | Much of the current literature on social competence in schizophrenia has assumed that the paranoid schizophrenic is more competent than the nonparanoid. Researchers have generally not investigated the competence of these samples over time or when the subjects remit and are no longer hospitalized. The present study assessed four groups of subjects-episodic paranoid, episodic nonparanoid, remitted paranoid, and remitted nonparanoid-on the Zigler-Phillips social competence measure. The paranoids and nonparanoids were not significantly different from one another. However, the remitted patients were significantly more socially competent than the episodic patients. The implications of this finding are discussed, especially regarding the relationship between symptom severity, hospitalization, and social competence.
