Zusammenfassung: | Presents results of a national census of all psychological personnel residing in the US in 1983. A total pool of 102,101 individuals were identified, representing 3 overlapping subsets involved in research, education, and service delivery. Demographics, employment settings, job activities, and geographical distributions (including state-by-state population ratios) are presented. Over 70% of respondents were involved in 2 or more of these activities, suggesting that the "pure" scientist or "pure" practitioner is an unusual set of employment activities. It was estimated that the 44,580 doctoral psychologist practitioners provide over 51 million hours of care per year to between 3.7 and 10.3 million people. Specific observations about individuals within master's level training in psychology, school psychologists, and the representativeness (and usability) of the American Psychological Association member database for policy research are made.
