Unmet Expectations

Reviews the book, The Psychologist, the School, and the Child with MBD/LD edited by Leon Oettinger, Jr., and Lawrence V. Majovski (1978). This book is an edited version of a 1976 symposium on the same topic. It is routine to comment that edited books are uneven, although unevenness is not invariably debilitating warrant recommendation. Some of the chapters are overly brief, such as a four-page chapter on educational policy and brain .science which, if expanded, could have been most stimulating. Other chapters, on the other hand, are exceedingly long and overly detailed, including one on self-regulation training for undercontrolled children that includes eight complete case studies and is entirely out of balance with the rest of the book with respect to length and other aspects.
