Zusammenfassung: | Paul I. Hettich comments on Ronald R. Schmeck's review (see record 2006-06467-027) of Hettich's book, Learning Skills for College and Career (see record 1992-97756-000). Hettich says that the book is primarily about study skills, not personal adjustment, as Schmeck claims. Paradoxically, Schmeck compliments the book for its "superb job of appealing to the career motive," criticizes it for being academic and scholarly, and then questions if we should force a "linear, logical, and orderly" way of thinking on students who are diverse and alienated from college. Is cultural diversity incompatible with linear, logical, and orderly thinking? Does Schmeck have an inside track on careers that do not require such thinking of college graduates?
