Reviews the book, Psychiatric Factors in Drug Abuse edited by Roy W. Pickens and Leonard L. Heston (1979). This book is a compilation of presentations made at a conference on psychiatric factors in drug abuse. The collection will provide a valuable overview of the field for the moderately sophisticated reader. If this volume has a single fault, it is that the editors, although they have not actually fallen down on the job, have noticeably stumbled. The recurrent themes, some of which I have described, could have been delineated by them so as to bring the various presentations into a more coherent and integrated whole.
