Reviews the book, Sexuality and the Mentally Retarded: A Clinical and Therapeutic Guidebook by Rosalyn Kramer Monat (1982). In this volume, Monat traces some of the history of social attitudes that have sustained the view of the mentally retarded as asexual or, when sexuality is manifested, the view that such behavior can and should be eliminated through swift and certain punishment. This is a practical little book based on the personal experiences of someone who has put these programs together and who knows that the staff must be trained before the students can be trained.
