Zusammenfassung: | Review of book: Children's Language (Vol. 8), edited by Keith E. Nelson and Zita Réger (see record 1995-97011-000). This book is a selection of papers presented at the International Association for the Study of Child Language in July 1990. a variety of issues: The 11-chapter volume breaks into several informal sections on topics such as bilingualism, the role of communicative interaction on language development, and the role of phonology in reading development in hearing and deaf children. In addition, there are several stand-alone chapters. If there is any underlying theme to the collection, it is that language development is not simple; rather, language acquisition is driven by both innate and social forces, and children's knowledge about syntax, semantics, phonology, discourse, and the world around them must be considered together to describe the process of language learning. Overall, the papers are diverse in topic, quality and intended audience. Although most readers will find an interesting paper within the volume, relatively few will be riveted by the majority. The papers are neither general enough to comprise an introductory volume for the newcomer to the field nor specific enough for the established researcher.
