Zusammenfassung: | Adolescence is a poignant time in which we learn to cope with maturational changes, conflicting role demands, parental and peer pressures, and increasingly complex romantic relationships. So, what does the empirical literature tell us about how adolescents cope during this critical development period? Not much, according to Seiffge-Krenke. Seiffge-Krenke's research program, documented in her recent book Stress, Coping, and Relationships in Adolescence (see record 1995-98574-000), attempts to redress this deficit. This book addresses a set of fundamental questions about adolescent coping: What types of stressors are salient for the vast majority of adolescents? How do age and gender differences shape coping behavior? How does the family shape coping responses? Does personality influence the manner of stress appraisal and coping style? What do we know about the nature of close friendships in adolescence and how do they contribute to individual coping? The book explores these questions in its 10 chapters. Readers expecting a developmental account of adolescent coping may be somewhat disappointed. Developmental issues do not play a prominent role in Seiffge-Krenke's research. Similarly, readers expecting experimental, hypothesis-driven research on stress and coping may be disappointed. All seven studies are correlational and primarily descriptive. However, the reviewer concludes that this book is an important addition to the literature on adolescent coping. Seiffge-Krenke's research program contributes to an empirical foundation for research in this area and defines an agenda for the future.
