Zusammenfassung: | Reviews the book, The Genain Quadruplets edited by David Rosenthal (see record 2007-02259-000). The book should not be read in the sequence in which it is presented unless the reader is prepared to reread large sections after he has digested the "Theoretical Overview" by Rosenthal. In reviewing both the evidence in the book and the evidence in the literature on schizophrenia, the editor rejects the hypothesis that schizophrenia is a genetically determined metabolic error in which the severity of the symptoms corresponds to the degree of the metabolic disturbance. The Genain quadruplets were found to share an abnormal EEG with their father, whose family had a history of psychiatric disorders. However, on balance, Dr. Rosenthal concludes that a predisposing genotype is suggested by the data and that both genetic and environmental factors must be taken into account.
