The Practice of Neuropsychology

Reviews the book, Clinical Syndromes in Adult Neuropsychology: The Practitioner's Handbook edited by R. F. White (1992). This text edited is a departure from the classical syndrome approach. Instead, the 11 chapters of the book are devoted to neurological diseases (or syndromes) that are typically associated with disorders of higher cognitive functions. The inclusion of relatively contemporary neuropsychological problems--such as those associated with frontal lobe dementias, HIV-infection, or toxin exposure--makes the book particularly valuable for practitioners of behavioral neurology and clinical neuropsychology. The book also includes an Appendix with a reference list of clinical neuropsychological tests and an outline for a neuropsychological interview. Four of the chapters are devoted to neuropsychological assessment of degenerative conditions (Huntington's, Parkinson's, frontal lobe dementia, and Alzheimer's), and the remaining chapters cover the neuropsychological manifestations of miscellaneous other neurological conditions, including viral infections (HIV-1), multiple sclerosis, schizophrenia, toxin exposure, and developmental learning disabilities. With the exception of the chapter on schizophrenia, these chapters all cover neurological problems frequently encountered in the practice of neuropsychology.
