Professional Ethics: Being Knowledgeable, Alert, and Committed

Reviews the book, Ethics desk reference for psychologists by Jeffrey E. Barnett and W. Brad Johnson (see record 2008-06411-000). This book provides a detailed study of the APA (2002) ethics code, outlining its five aspirational principles and 89 enforceable standards distributed over 10 domains. For each standard, the authors discuss the essential elements, identify common dilemmas and conflicts, and provide tips for positive practice. In so doing, they provide a compact, user-friendly resource guide. The EDR increases knowledge and understanding of psychology's ethics culture (see Handelsman, Gottlieb, & Knapp, 2005), enhances awareness of how ethical issues might present, and provides suggestions for professionals working proactively to maintain high ethical standards. The EDR is useful in its ability to offer quick consultation in clinical settings and for a positive proactive review of psychologists' ethical commitments.
