Zusammenfassung: | Reviews the book, Family Therapy: Theory and Practice edited by Philip J. Guerin, Jr. (see record 1977-06288-000). The volume is characterized by a respectful attitude toward differences among the various schools of family therapy. The history of the field, described excellently by Guerin in his introductory chapter, shows that this was not always the case. At first, a number of pioneers such as Bowen, Ackerman, Bateson, and Minuchin worked in relative ignorance of each other. After family therapy came out into the open, there was a period during which family therapists acted as if they were in complete agreement, at least in contrast to individual therapists.
