Zusammenfassung: | This text by Klingman and Cohen (see record 2004-14649-000) focuses primarily on a single category of disaster, one that originates in the malevolence of human beings willing to wreak destruction and death on civilian populations to achieve their goals, and provides a rationale for intervention based in the public-school system and also describes a variety of school-based intervention techniques. The book is divided into three sections: a systematic review of theory and findings relevant to mass disasters in general; a presentation of a conceptual basis for school-wide preventive interventions; and a comprehensive intervention plan involving school children, parents, school personnel, and community agencies. According to the authors, the book is designed for two groups: professional mental-health workers and educators and school administrators. Overall, the reviewer found this book to be well written, well referenced, and is in general, a good introduction to school-based intervention in large-scale disaster for community-oriented mental health workers.
