Zusammenfassung: | The reviewer notes that this book (see record 1998-06730-000) reports on the Victoria Longitudinal Study (VLS) of Memory Change in the Aged. The problem addressed, memory functioning in late life, is widely regarded as one of the most significant problems for older adults, and research on this topic has been one of the most prolific in the field of gerontology. The reviewer concludes that the study reported in this volume is more extensive and more carefully designed than most previously reported studies of memory aging. Though none of the findings is likely to radically change current thinking about memory or aging, they do strengthen current views. Not surprisingly, in a short final section on future directions, the authors state that the initial phase of the VLS provides a compelling argument for further longitudinal examination of cognitive functioning in later life, and that a second longitudinal sequence already has been added.
