Zusammenfassung: | Onof's book "The Problem of Free Will and Naturalism" can be read in two ways. The "problem" in question can be taken as the famous philosophical problem of whether free will is compatible with natural causal determinism. The addition of "Naturalism" then serves to show that, unlike the contemporary debate, the setting of this problem in a naturalistic framework will be at issue. This is how he understands the problem that the book tackles. What the examination of this issue reveals, is that the problem lies fundamentally in the incompatibility of free will and naturalism, an incompatibility that is ultimately summarized in the paradoxical nature of self-determination: the title thereby takes on a second meaning, namely that of the problem of the compatibility of free will and naturalism. |
