Workforce readiness and guidelines 3.0: Is it time to update the skillful psychology student?

Skill development continues to be an essential part of undergraduate education. The American Psychological Association Guidelines for the Undergraduate Major V3.0 (hereinafter referred to as Guidelines 3.0) recognized this importance and updated the document to integrate skills throughout. Additionally, these updates often mirror how employers conceptualize or prioritize different skills because desired and needed workforce skills transform over time. Changes to both Guidelines 3.0 and employer conceptualization of skills have important implications for The Skillful Psychology Student: Prepared for Success in the 21 st Century Workplace (hereinafter referred to as SPS), a document that helps students perceive and articulate how skills developed through the psychology major align with workforce skills. We critically examine how the updates within Guidelines 3.0 and existing employer surveys point to emerging trends in the workforce that could inform an updated version of the SPS.
