Zusammenfassung:In writing the history of art, art historians always make choices, preferring some artists over others, which later forms the canon of art history. In this article, I will critically examine the concept of the canon, the process of canon formation and ways for the canon to become more open, flexible and multi-vocal. I argue that the canon rejects the horizontal approach to art history, which includes more marginal voices that have been left out. As an example, I discuss the work of Thomas Erma, an American artist born in Estonia, in relation to the canon of abstract expressionism.
