Zusammenfassung: | Street food vending has been identified as a cornerstone of socio-economic growth in the world at large and South Africa. Several studies have been conducted focusing on the challenges faced by the informal sector. However, very little research has been done on street food vending. This study explored the challenges plaguing street food vending in the Mahikeng Local Municipality, South Africa. A qualitative approach was used, and 24 participants took part in the study. A semi-structured interview guide was employed to collect data from the participants. The analysis was thematic and two main themes were identified. The themes identified were the types of food sold by food traders and the challenges faced in street food vending. It was found that vendors are plagued by a lack of finance and credit; harassment; and confiscation of food items and utensils. Also, traders were faced with lack of skills and knowledge as well as a street vending policy which reduces the profit made, thereby hampering poverty reduction, and hindering the growth of the business. The government and municipal authorities should design helpful policies and legislative frameworks that promote and provide an appropriate atmosphere for earning livelihoods through street food vending. |
