Zusammenfassung: | Purpose
The present study aimed to investigate the association between sleep architecture and cognitive functions using objective electrophysiological measures in an urban Indian collegiate population.
Methods
Forty-four collegiate students fulfilling the eligibility criteria were instructed to report to the laboratory for 2 consecutive nights at 10:00 p.m., and on the third day at 11:00 a.m. After familiarization on first night, complete nocturnal polysomnography (PSG) was performed with electroencephalograms (EEG), chin electromyography (EMG) and bilateral electrooculogram (EOG) in place. Sleep stages were scored manually in accordance with the new AASM guidelines. PSG variables reported in the present study are total bed time (TBT), sleep time (TST), amount (in minutes) and percentage of N1, N2, N3, NREM (non-rapid eye movement) REM (rapid eye movement) and sleep efficiency. Cognition was evaluated using event-related potential P300 using auditory oddball paradigm. Both amplitude (µV) and latency (ms) are reported.
Results
A sample of 44 collegiates with mean age = 23.36 years, height = 160.17 cm, weight = 57.57 kg and body mass index (BMI) = 21.51 participated in the study. Pearson’s correlation analysis revealed that P300 amplitude was significantly related to TST, N1, N2, N3, NREM sleep and SE. However, no significant relationship was obtained between REM sleep and the amplitude of P300 wave. Similarly, P300 latency showed significant association with TST, N1, N2, N3, NREM sleep and SE, but not with other PSG parameters.
Conclusion
The present study concludes that there is significant association between electrophysiological correlates of sleep and cognition in collegiate population. |
