Zusammenfassung: | Eckert discusses his study on the dominance of yellowheaded blackbirds and redwinged blackbirds and habitat loss. The blackbirds coexist in marshes across North America, with yellowheads dominating over redwings in nesting areas. However, both species have experienced habitat loss due to the construction and expansion of Vancouver International Airport. Surprisingly, despite their dominant behavior, yellowheaded blackbirds have been more negatively impacted by habitat loss than their subordinate redwinged counterparts. The population of yellowheads at Iona Beach has decreased by 95% over the past half-century, while redwings continue to thrive. This raises questions about the true dominant species and the potential extirpation of yellowheaded blackbirds from Iona Beach. Despite their decline, the remaining yellowheads still bully the abundant redwings for nesting space. |
