UNITED STATES - MARCH 21: APPROPRIATIONS HEARING ON NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH--Dr. Claude Lenfant, director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, testifies with other NIH directors during the Senate Subcommittee on Labor-HHS-Education Appropriations hearing on the FY2003 budget request by the president. Writing about Lenfant in 2017, the late Edward Roccella, a leading public health expert in hypertension and cardiovascular disease at NHLBI, commented that “Dr Lenfant brought the Institute into the modern era of science with initiatives in…molecular biology, proteomics, and NIH's first gene therapy protocol.” Lenfant leaves children Bernard, Bridget, Christine, Martine, and Philippe by a previous marriage and his wife, Suzanne Hurd.
