Zusammenfassung:The current state of audio collecting in libraries is influenced by three main factors: the changing media distribution landscape, evolving patron expectations and behaviors, and institutional missions that struggle to balance preservation and access. Libraries have always had to adapt to new technologies and changes in the music industry, but the rapid changes in the past decade have required libraries to think critically about their collecting strategies. The rise and fall of different music formats, such as LPs, cassettes, CDs, digital downloads, and streaming services, have shaped the collections in libraries. However, libraries now face challenges in acquiring, preserving, and sharing content due to the proliferation of platforms and the limited access for libraries and their patrons. While libraries continue to collect physical formats to fulfill their mission of preservation, patrons and consumers increasingly prefer online content, especially video. Libraries must navigate the digital landscape while also maintaining and building physical audio collections. Commercial streaming platforms available to libraries vary in terms of content, coverage, features, and pricing structures. Libraries must advocate for access to content currently restricted to individual access and work with content distributors to legally acquire and share digital audio. Collaboration and shared infrastructure development are also important for libraries to address these challenges and continue collecting audio in the digital age.
