Zusammenfassung:We investigate two typical trihalide ionic liquids, 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium bromodiiodide ([C 8 C 1 Im][BrI 2 ]) and 1-octyl-3-butylimidazolium bromodiiodide ([C 8 C 4 Im][BrI 2 ]), using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electronic environment of each element within the [BrI 2 ] – anion is analyzed in detail. The Br 3 d binding energy of [C 8 C 1 Im][BrI 2 ] is found higher than that of [C 8 C 1 Im]Br, due to the formation of the negative charge delocalized structure. The I 3 d spectrum indicates that there are two iodine components formed, showing binding energies at 620.8 and 619.6 eV, respectively. The structure of the [BrI 2 ] – anion is subsequently confirmed.
