Zusammenfassung:Salafiyah Islamic boarding schools require students to study the Yellow Books as part of their compulsory curriculum. Even though these books contain teachings that promote intolerance regarding the principles of hudud and jihad, students are known for their tolerant attitude and rarely participate in religious violence. Individuals are not merely adhering to the religious teachings contained within scripture dating back several centuries without question. This is largely due to the guidance provided by Kyai (scholars), fostering a tolerant and inquisitive mindset in their students. Therefore, this study explores the role of Kyai's authority in interpreting the intolerant teachings in the Yellow Books, and how it contributes to the formation of tolerant thinking among students through a qualitative approach. The data sources were Kyai at the Sabilurrosyad Islamic boarding school in Malang, and data was collected through interviews with caretakers and teachers. Furthermore, the data analysis was inductive, with steps to reduce presentation and draw conclusions. The results showed that the teaching style of Kyai effectively assists students in understanding texts by considering the social and cultural context, adhering to government regulations, embracing local wisdom, recognizing social circumstances, and promoting religious tolerance. In conclusion, Kyai is the determiner of the interpretation of the Yellow Books.
