Zusammenfassung:This paper deals with an application of the names of the days of the week in Slovak oikonyms. Some of the names of Slovak municipalities were motivated by the names of the days of the week, e. g. Monday (Pondelok), Wednesday (Dunajská Streda), Thursday (Spišský Štvrtok), Saturday (Rimavská Sobota). The settlement names and their history indicate the efforts of secular and religious powers to eliminate markets on Sunday, mainly regular weekly markets, which is related to the consolidation of the position of Christianity in society. The situation was different in the case of annual markets, which increased the prosperity of cities and the state. The paper also stresses the use of the names of the week as oikonyms within the unofficial language of residents, which have transformed into the official toponymy, as well as the government´s attempts to create an artificial name, however, not accepted by the language practice.
