Corrosion Behavior of AlMg5/10ZrO2 Metal Matrix Composite in 3.5 wt% NaCl Solution

Zusammenfassung:In this study, the corrosion behavior and electrochemical properties of AlMg5/10ZrO 2 composite were investigated in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The behavior was compared with its base alloy (AlMg5), monothetic components (Al and Mg), and the second phase (Al 3 Mg 2 ). The composite was prepared using a casting route. The microstructure and morphology of the fabricated alloys were studied by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, and X-ray diffraction. The corrosion behavior was evaluated by different electrochemical techniques and immersion tests. Incorporating ZrO 2 into AlMg5 base matrix leads to a grain refinement in the macrostructure of the matrix. The results have revealed that corrosion resistance of AlMg5/10ZrO 2 composite has been improved compared to its base alloy, pure Mg, Al 3 Mg 2 , and pure Al. The passive current density of the composite alloy exhibited a value lower than that of the base alloy. Further, the results showed that a porous corrosion product with a muddy structure was formed on the surface of AlMg5 base alloy, while the AlMg5/10ZrO 2 composite exhibited dense corrosion products layer.
