Even if the software radio (Swr) in the literally definition sense is still a vision, there are essential reasons why the concept of a software defined radio architecture is meaningful for commercial applications and for base stations.This article should outline from a manufacturer’s of mobile infrastructure point of view the benefit out of a software radio attempt for the manufacturer as well as for the mobile network provider.The technological challenges and actual borders shall be discussed and the activities in this field at Alcatel’s Research & Innovations (R & I) department shall be presented.
