Zusammenfassung: | By far the most important sub-market in the construction industry is residential construction. In 2021, this area accounted for almost 60% of the entire German construction volume (Gornig, Michelsen and Révész 2021). Demand on the housing market developed very dynamically in the 2010s, not least due to the high level of net immigration to Germany. As a result, there was significant tension on the housing market. One expression of the housing shortage is the increasing difference between new and existing rents. Those looking for an apartment have to pay high surcharges on top of the usual local rents, especially in the conurbations (Waltersbacher 2022). |
