Conscription and the Search for Modern Russian Jewry

Litvak's book is an impressive and important piece of scholarship that will force future scholars to re-evaluate the trajectory of Jewish enlightenment in the Russian empire, the development of Jewish national self-consciousness, and most importantly, the relationship between Jewish literature and collective memory. [...] I wonder if Litvak's work undermines the usefulness of terms she continually employs, such as "unserfment" and emancipation.
