Zusammenfassung:In this first volume of the new de Gruyter series ‘Trends in Classics – Key Perspectives on Classical Research’ H. brilliantly guides readers through a ‘critical reappraisal of research on the kingdom of Macedon conducted in recent decades and even further back’ (p. v). Beginning with a short introduction presenting the significance of ancient Macedonia in a modern context, the heart of the book is found in three chapters covering the land (Chapter 2), the people (Chapter 3) and prominent Macedonian personalities (Chapter 4). Chapter 2 addresses the question ‘where was Macedonia?’, which includes the discussion of the geographical location of Macedonia in archaic, classical and Hellenistic times. Because addressing fundamental geographical questions of ancient places, which here mean the borders, expansions and locations of the important cities of Aigai and Pella, greatly influences our understanding of the historical evolution of Macedonia, this topic is the most sensible place to begin.
