COATINGS TECHNOLOGY

Goldie provides an overview of paint and coatings technology, as an introduction to the Coatings 101 education series. In industrial settings, where large, vital steel and concrete assets face harsh conditions and exposures that can threaten the integrity of the structure, paints are applied primarily for protection purposes and are formulated with special properties that differ them from typical "house paints." All liquid coatings are composed of three basic ingredients, namely resins, pigments, and solvents. While coatings can be described in a number of ways depending on use, a simpler classification is to split them into two different areas, heavy-duty protective coatings and industrial coatings, as used in the OEM market.
