Zusammenfassung: | This article focuses on the text of Seneca’s ad Polybium 17.4, in particular on tesseris ac foro, which lies immediately before a text suspected of being corrupt and published by Reynolds between cruces: this expression is commonly interpreted as relating to gambling and foro should accordingly indicate a kind of tabula lusoria. A new exegesis of foro is proposed here, based also on the analysis of Svet. Aug. 71.3 and therefore a different textual arrangement is assumed for the whole Senecan passage. KEYWORDS: Seneca, Svetonius, Gaius Caligula, Augustus, forum, gambling. |
