Interlayer Characterization and Properties Evaluation of Zirconium and 304-Stainless Steel Rotary Friction Weld Joints

Zr-702 alloy was joined to 304-stainless steel (SS) using rotary friction welding to produce a submicron joint interface. Characterization reveals that the interface contains multiple phases of zirconium (Zr), iron and nickel. Nickel from the SS diffused towards the Zr to form Ni 2 Zr 7 . In additio...

Zusammenfassung:Zr-702 alloy was joined to 304-stainless steel (SS) using rotary friction welding to produce a submicron joint interface. Characterization reveals that the interface contains multiple phases of zirconium (Zr), iron and nickel. Nickel from the SS diffused towards the Zr to form Ni 2 Zr 7 . In addition, deformation twinning were observed in the Fe 2 Zr phase. A maximum joint strength of 250 MPa was achieved following post-weld heat treatment at 600 °C for 1 hour, though ductility was low.
