Trace elements assessment and natural radioactivity levels of infant formulas consumed in Egypt

Powder samples of infant’s milk formula from thirty four different brands commonly consumed in Egypt were collected from drug stores and local markets. The concentrations of seventeen elements (Al, Br, Ca, Cl, Co, Cu, Fe, I, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, and Zn) were determined by instrumental neut...

Zusammenfassung:Powder samples of infant’s milk formula from thirty four different brands commonly consumed in Egypt were collected from drug stores and local markets. The concentrations of seventeen elements (Al, Br, Ca, Cl, Co, Cu, Fe, I, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, and Zn) were determined by instrumental neutron activation analysis. The results reveal that the infants’ milk provides adequate amounts of most essential elements; and considered as a suitable source of nutrient for infants during their early life stages. The activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th and 40 K were measured and used to estimate the radiation hazard indices.
