Zusammenfassung:Abstract Using a comparative perspective, this paper aims to explain why education, specifically the education of women, became a controversial political question in France and Spain in the 19th century, particularly between 1865 and 1875. The first is the attempt to establish a state secondary education for girls at the end of the Second Empire, while the second concerns the rejection to swear in the Constitution of 1869 by some schoolmistresses with strong religious convictions. Keywords Women's education; Catholic Church; State; schoolmistresses; France; Spain; nineteenth century. Sin embargo, bien por escasez de recursos, bien por falta de voluntad política, ni en Francia ni en España se estableció una red extensa y estable de lo que hoy denominamos escuelas públicas.
