DETERMINATION OF HAPTOGLOBIN, SOME BIOCHEMICAL AND OXIDATIVE STRESS PARAMETERS IN CALVES WITH PNEUMONIA

The study was designed to determine blood levels of haptoglobin (Hp), some biochemical and oxidative stress parameters in calves with pneumonia. A total of 25 calves, 15 pneumonic and 10 clinically healthy, were used in the study. Blood samples were collected before and 7 days after treatment. These...

Zusammenfassung:The study was designed to determine blood levels of haptoglobin (Hp), some biochemical and oxidative stress parameters in calves with pneumonia. A total of 25 calves, 15 pneumonic and 10 clinically healthy, were used in the study. Blood samples were collected before and 7 days after treatment. These samples were used to determine reduced glutathione (GSH), Hp, total bilirubin, urea, creatinine, malondialdehyde (MDA), triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C), low density lipo-protein-cholesterol (LDL-C), very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (VLDL-C) concentrations and the activities of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). In the study, Hp, MDA, ALP, AST, creatinine, TG and VLDL-C values were higher in pneumonic calves than healthy calves. Contrastingly, the concentrations of GSH, TC, HDL-C and LDL-C in calves with pneumonia were lower than those of control group. The concentrations of Hp, MDA, TG, VLDL-C and the activity of ALP were obtained to be significantly low in pneumonic calves compared to those of healthy calves. It is concluded that acute phase protein, lipid profile and oxidative stress parameters were altered in calves with pneumonia. It is thought that Hp can be useful to determine inflammation and severity of inflammation in calves with pneumonia.
