Zusammenfassung:Aim: The aim of this prospective study is to investigate the potential role of liquid based cytology in the mass screening population for endometrial lesions. Methods: The study was performed on cytologic material obtained by the Endogyn (Biogyn, Mirandola, Italy) endometrial cell sampler from 160 women examined during the last six months in the out patient Gynecologic Oncology Clinic of our Hospital. The brush was immersed in CytoLyt (Cytyc, Marlborough, MA) and one Thin- Prep (Cytyc, Marlborough, MA) slide was prepared. The smears were stained by Papanicolaou technique. All slides were evaluated for cellularity, quality, cellular preservation and quantity of diagnostic cells. The cytologic diagnosis was confirmed by the vaginal ultrasound examination, histologic examination of endometrial specimens. Results: Inadequate smears were presented in 6 out the 78 cases of atrophic endometrium, and in 3 out the 65 cases of reproductive age women. In the remaining cases the 62 cases of reproductive age women, 72 cases of atrophic endometrium and the 10 cases of adenocarcinomas were correctly diagnosed; In 1 out 4 cases of simple hyperplasia no evidence of malignancy was found in the cytologic examination. Finally 1 out 3 cases of complex atypical hyperplasia was misclassified as adenocarcinoma. Conclusions: Liquid based Cytology appears to be an accurate method for the investigation of endometrial lesions. However in some cases inadequate material or low cellularity samples were obtained.
